For a hospital, medical staff, professional society or other reporting entity, the NPDB report is also a high stakes matter.  Federal law mandates the filing of the report in specific circumstances known as “reportable actions,” which include things like medical malpractice payments, certain adverse licensure actions, and professional review actions. The failure to report a reportable action to the NPDB can result in sanctions, including financial penalties and loss of immunity.
